Bangalore Metro – Rhetorical!

“History teaches us that men & nations behave wisely once they have exhausted all other alternatives” – Abba Eban

Finally the much awaited Namma Metro started operating on October 20, 2011, much after the set deadline which was March 30, 2010. I wonder at times why does Indian Government have deadlines at all? Who has ever adhered to them? Well I am sure our Government has enough and more funds to bear all the delays and of course the additional costs of everything, right from raw material to labour to interest rates on the borrowed amount from other countries!

After the smooth running Kolkata Metro & the successful Delhi Metro, the IT city of India decides to roll out its grand and ambitious metro project to alleviate traffic woes in the city. Definitely a great initiative by the government. But of course with the most corrupt politicians waiting for every opportunity to fill their pockets, how could one every think of metro starting its operations on the dot! I read in the newspapers that the approximate cost of Bangalore Metro with the delay comes upto Rs 6400 crores, and and this is the cost of phase-I which covers 8.7 kms. Phase-II has begun and the cost is estimated around Rs 25000 crore which will cover an area of 70 kms. Ambitious again! I know I am being extremely cynical here, but then the public at large, rich & poor alike have to bear the brunts of the corrupt practices of these politicians. Of what I read, (I would like to believe the media here, though they blow things out of proportion) and also heard from an insider (political house), Mr. E Sreedharan, the managing director of Delhi Metro was to take charge of the Bangalore Metro as well. But then, knowing his reputation of finishing work as per the deadline, he was kept away from taking over the project. Isn’t it obvious that he wouldn’t be allowed to undertake any such projects, or how else will the politicians survive?

I haven’t taken a ride on the Bangalore metro yet, but i am looking forward to the test drive and will come back with my view or review of the metro and its functioning πŸ™‚

Life and Death

I pray you’ll be our eyes, and watch us where we go.
And help us to be wise in times when we don’t know
Let this be our prayer, when we lose our way
Lead us to the place, guide us with your grace
To a place where we’ll be safe

– Sung by Celine Dion

As a child I often wondered and posed this question to my mom- “Mamma where do people go after they die?” To which my mom would reply, “darling they go to Heaven”. I just believed what she said until I started attending Sunday Church classes where I got to know that according to Roman Catholics there is a place called “Purgatory” where people arrive after death for the process of purification. Apparently, depending on the the sins one has committed in his earthly life he is led from purgatory to Heaven or Hell. (I am for sure going to Hell :P). Well that did satiate my curiosity for a while but not long enough for me to wonder what would Heaven or Hell be like!

A funny instance that I came across once:

A guy dies and goes to purgatory and is asked by St. Peter- “My son since you have not sinned much on earth let me give you the opportunity to chose between Heaven & Hell”

So the guy (smart a** that he was) asked St. Peter- “Can I take a look at both before I make the decision?”

To which St. Peter says- “Go ahead my son”

The guy takes a look at Heaven first. He is shocked to see a sad looking place, with people wearing white garments and looking all dull, pale and sad. He then goes to Hell and to his amusement what he sees- Hot chicks waiting at the entrance to welcome him, discotheques, a fountain of beer and all the possible delightful things he could have ever imagined was there. He quickly returned to Purgatory where St. Peter was waiting for him.

He said,” St. Peter I have made up my mind and would like to go to hell”. St. Peter asked him, “Are you sure? Because once you choose to go to hell, there is no returning.” To which he promptly replied, ” Yes, I am very sure”

And so he goes to hell all excited and thrilled to experience the unending ecstasy of death. On his arrival what he sees, fire burning everywhere, rotten bodies and misery surrounding everywhere. He is in disbelief beyond imagination and runs to Satan and says, “this is not what I saw. This is not the place where I wanted to be.” To which Satan replies in his satanic laugh,” That was our advertising department”. And then he orders his assistants to throw this man in the fire of hell.

What we often see is not what we get. I personally do not know if there is a life at all after death (though I am extremely curious to know). But what I do know and believe is, do your deeds on earth (of course good ones) and leave it there, because Heaven and hell are on earth itself. I find it very weird when people say you know what, I am an atheist.I don’t believe in God. I say to myself, good for you. Be that way!Β  Not that I have anything against them or their thought, but maybe I am just too traditional in my thoughts.

Once a priest asked me, do you follow the religion religiously? To which I politely said, No I don’t do everything that is religious, but I believe in leading a spiritually enriched life. Salvation is not only in Heaven but in every good thing you do on earth. I guess if you do not hold vengeance against someone, do not hurt someone on purpose, help people around you in small ways and do not kill, its just enough to be called Human on earth.

thE discounT seasoN!

I love the new year, everyone does. Of course along with glad tidings it brings you loads and loads of opportunity to shop πŸ™‚ Yes you can shop and shop till you drop because there is sale all over the place for almost a month and a half. It is that tricky time of the year when you see SALE all over the place and it is so difficult to resist the temptation!

This is what most of the brand owners think, and to a great extent they are not wrong either. Well the flat 50% discount and upto 70% discount started sometime in 2005 and the first three years were great, as it was a hit among the mass. People would flood to various brands and pick up stuff at amazingly low prices. But then as years passed by and the discount season became half yearly, people lost interest and it has become more of footfalls in stores rather than increased sales. The reason being people know it is not just a one time discount and would be soon available in a couple of months again. Another big reason is that many people including me think that these discounts are very deceiving. Though the boards outside the stores read upto 50% off, in reality when you step in and check out the prices, you will hardly find discount on good stuff or anything which has a discount close to 50%. And the worst part to the discount is, even if one has picked up stuff with discount, ends up with either some defect or doesn’t last long.

But then the point is, what is the reason behind discount which is off season? When I say off season, I mean when there are no festivals around. People who have the money to splurge anyway; with or without discounts. But I wonder, are the brands are trying to cater to the middle and the upper middle class? In that case why such lousy sale or discounts?

Media has even called it a Virus πŸ˜› that attacks twice a year summers and winters.Β  It is shopper’s paradise for shopaholics with most of the brands announcing sale. On weekends you see Malls and various shopping outlets crowded with people. But then I wonder what are the sales margins like?

Here is what a few people had to say about the ongoing sale in the city.

Ms Adithi, ” They are trying to get rid of all the s**t in the store”.

Mr. Steven, “They come and go and come and go… Bangaloreans are used to them by now but yes, they still manage to tempt you to spend.”

Mr Suneet, ” Its a good, if you get great deals.”

Mrs Vinitha, “this is the best time to buy something coz u end up getting more stuff for the what u would end up spending normally.”

While according to some its a good time to shop, for others it is just another time of the year. I would conclude saying, when something becomes repetitive it looses its charm!

When people were just getting over the hype about Obama being the US President, he has yet another reason to make headlines all over the world….Every news paper, online portal, news wire and television bombarded its audience with news flashing about Obama winning the Nobel prize for “Peace”.

My reaction was, “Oh really? Did he just not complete 9 months of his Presidentship? Well his remaining tenure is 4 years and 3 months and what I am wondering is, what is the next thing which will make headlines about Obama?” He won Nobel for Nuclear Disarmament and Multilateralism. Isn’t it too early for his tenure?

Obama was greatly surprised and deeply humbled and says that he would accept this award as a “call to action” to confront the global challenges of the 21st century.

When war becomes peace,

When concepts and realities are turned upside down,

When fiction becomes truth and truth becomes fiction.

When a global military agenda is heralded as a humanitarian endeavor,

When the killing of civilians is upheld as “collateral damage”,

When those who resist the US-NATO led invasion of their homeland are categorized as “insurgents” or “terrorists”.

When preemptive nuclear war is upheld as self defense.

When advanced torture and “interrogation” techniques are routinely used to “protect peacekeeping operations”,

When tactical nuclear weapons are heralded by the Pentagon as “harmless to the surrounding civilian population”

When three quarters of US personal federal income tax revenues are allocated to financing what is euphemistically referred to as “national defense”

When the Commander in Chief of the largest military force on planet earth is presented as a global peace-maker,

When the Lie becomes the Truth –

Courtesy- Michel Chossudovsky

Even if I am being cynical, my point is Nobel laureate is given to someone who has achieved/contributed and not just proposed…..He is definitely not in the league of Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, Jimmy Carter Jr, Aung San Suu Kyi, Dalali Lama and many such great people who have contributed towards causes which have brought about a revolution globally and made this world ‘A Global Village’.

As if his election campaign was not hype enough that he had to be bestowed with the Nobel Prize…and for what? For proposing Nuclear disarmament…..Then why not our humble PM Manmohan Singh who extended his hand of friendship towards Pakistan?

May be Obama just got lucky!

Individuals that we are and the unique identity that each one of has, we live with our own set of thoughts and principals in life. But we still fall in some or the other category of people! Let me throw some light when I say ‘category of people’…Music lovers, Art admirer, avid bloggers :P, sports & adventure enthusiasts etc…And some where or the other deep inside we are judges and critics as well……We judge people as if we are perfectionists, we criticize movies, views, technology, book under the pretext of reviewing or analyzing them. Of course we are educated enough and have the exposure, understanding and intelligence/brains to decide what’s good, bad or worse!

This is what we are in the web 2.0 era. But then there was a time when we had to abide by the societal norms, a set of right and wrong things, a certain parameter which defined good or evil, virtuous or iniquitous….A few instances…

  • till some 10 years ago, it was believed that kids who stood 1st to 3rd in the class were intelligent and would go on to have bright future
  • Only doctors, engineers, teachers were supposedly the best profession one could land up in
  • For a woman the best career option was being a teacher, as she could take care of the family and also contribute to the finance
  • Love marriage was not acceptable
  • talking about sex was a taboo and so was live-in-relationship
  • Married life can only be successful or blissful if you marry the person of your religion and caste

Well if I have to list down the things, they would go on and on. I have come across many people or instances where people who have not fallen into the above mentioned category have done really well in life…I know of few of my classmates, friends, seniors and juniors in school and colleges who always excelled in class and today are either married and are homemakers or have landed in sad jobs. A few years back I had this thing stuck in my mind, guys who smoke, do drugs or booze are ‘bad guys’, I shouldn’t be friends with them. But then when I shed that mindset and mingled with guys who indulge in all of it din’t make them any less worthy as human beings…Its just that at times we are thick and want to believe what we think is correct because we are conditioned to believe or think that way!

Another category of stereotypes is guys who are flirts, playboys…”I hate it when a guy calls a girl who has not given him her number” was my funda.Β  Many girls like me jump to this conclusion that a flirtatious guy can never be committed. True to a great extent! And I also have an instance to quote…A friend of mine got a call in such a way and the guy turned out to be a complete jack A**…..And I also have a friend who is married to a guy who apparently was a playboy and today he is the most loyal and dotting hubby a girl would want.

Well there are many such inhibitions that we need to shed. Many times I wonder why are there certain things we know are not logical, but yet to please may be our parents, people or the society follow it!

Is it a parallel UNIVERSE ?

It is so true about cosmic connections, intuitions, telepathy, sixth sense etc. I always enjoyed reading them in novel and loved its intensity in the movies till I experienced it myself.

We often think or may be believe to a great extent that we can feel the pain, turmoil, agony of our loved ones. But then who categorizes the veracity of it. The closer we get to some one ,( not necessarily family) we start getting emotional and connect to the person or people.

This may sound very surprising but for the past 9 months my best freind and I have been going through similar situations. Every time I would be in some soup and would be tensed so would he be. Every time I had a crush on someone, so did he, everytime I hated the guy who asked me out so did he hate the girl. Everytime I was depressed because the guy I liked things dint work out, it was the similar case with hime (of course in his case it was a girl). It was just 2 days ago that I called tell him that one of my friend has proposed to me he had the similar thing to tell me.Β  So I concluded that there should be some kind of connection, more than just deep friendship. I mean I would think it is a coincidence may be if it happened once, twice or thrice. But 9 months and similar situations, emotions, highs and lows is definately not a coincidence.

I am sure many of us experiecne such emotional wave in our lives, but then have all together different views and concept. I would say it is a parallel universe that we live in!
