What’s your perception of Beauty?

04 Sep

I always wondered and my jaw dropped every time I saw beautiful models on print ads, TV commercials, magazines, billboards, hoarding etc…And one thought that always crossed my mind was, God must have spent hours creating them…..

But then of course that thought was a part of my growing up years…..As I stepped out of my degree college and got into my masters and chose to get into advertising – Public relations, it involved a lot of on ground activities for advertising, which was inclusive of creatives, analysis, marketing & packaging strategy etc….Of course it was fun and an amazing experience….

Here was when I had my first encounter with what I would call ‘revelation’…..Facial make up is synonym to beauty in the world of advertising….Ok just to give a glimpse of what I just mentioned..

Well this ad is so true and well made…This ad has won two grand pix awards at Cannes this year. A Unilever product, this ad is a part of thier on-going Dove for real beauty campaign. This ad was shot in Toronto, Canada by Ogilvy and Mather

We get so carried away by the synthetic beauty that keeps hitting our eyes that we forget that we are surrounded with beauty all day long, in forms of moms, sisters, friends, wife, girlfriends, niece etc. Every woman is beautiful in her own way. Well I am not a feminist here…..but then I keep hearing guys say this..”Wow man, she is so hot, she is such an eye candy, she is so sexy, she is maal yaar, sexy thing yaar, wish I could take her to bed for once”, that’s not appreciating beauty, its demeaning it! I mean appreciating beauty and admiring it is completely acceptable, but then who on earth has given rights to guys to tag girls in categories of beauty!

NO WONDER OUR PERCEPTION OF BEAUTY IS SO DISTORTED!

hmmmm.. all kinds of beauty have their uses. Inner beauty is the best of course, but outer beauty is pleasing to the eye and a good way of refreshing our senses.

whats wrong with categories… Do you know that a lot of girls take offence if they dont make into one of these categories?

If the girls like, who are we to be perturbed by it? Not saying that it should be done, but there is a clientele for this kind of thing too…

In any case, the beauty n food industry thrives on convoluting our perception about food n sex. If we donr feel like “I want that” after watching the ad, the purpose is defeated. Thats why there has to be a woman making orgasmic sounds to sell coffee or chocolate! Ironically, condom ads can do with showing wrinkled satin sheets without actually showing who wrinkled them. Its all about pleasing the mind and capturing the viewers attention! Innit?

Glad u liked the post :)…Tx Lynn for the compliment 🙂

Agreed Ava…..But @ times ad just mutilate beauty and present it as if women are meant only for skin show …

Well Spikie…..I am not against showing skin or the creativity of the ads…I am in the industry and understand the nuances very well…
That is why the topic of my post reads what’s ur perception of beauty….its my view about the perception of beauty that is stale in the minds of people…And moreover it just satiates the desires virtually isnt it?:P
Or leme ask u this…how many products have bought impulsively just by watching a add or were convinced enough without using the product?

The purpose of the ad is to create interest and awareness about the product – the final purchase will be made after reading the back label and not the amount of skin shown by the model. Thats how I make my purchases…

Glad I dropped in here. I completely agree with you…our perception of beauty is totally distorted and we have the media boom to blame for it.

I have seen girls eating once a day to get to size zero and spending thousands on products that promise beautiful skin. but at the end of the day, ppl who care abt u and truly love you will accept you as u are..with that extra tyre and that occasional pimple.
People who categorize women dont deserve to be with one.

And yes, needless to say..I loved the ad!

Everybody has their own perception about beauty but what you have wrriten and shown, i tried to think over it ..and i got to the point where i do find that beauty is nothing but the plesantness of mind and it should be appreciated in proper and subtle manner..

    Good post..

hmm…valerine, i understand your take on the staleness…i agree. on the other hand, spikeace is right~ sex sells undeniably. i think the tide is turning away from wafer thin childlike models to more realistic views in advertising….perceptions are stubborn in that they take a long time to change.

There are some widely accepted standards for physical beauty. Feminine or Masculine.
    – Symmetry is the most obvious one (eg. things like having one eye droopier than the other, one arm disproportionately more muscular than the other, etc. is usually not considered beautiful, male or female)
    – Youth and general healthiness (pudgy, wrinkly, deformed people are not considered beautiful, male or female)

Those two points are applicable to standards of beauty in most societies. After that it really becomes a bit cultural, or based on personal preference.

Ahh… you did not end the post! Did you? It ended abruptly.

“A thing of beauty is a joy forever” is a wonderful saying. But beauty in itself is a myth. Tell me what is beautiful and what is not! We usually have a mental picture of how a beauty should look like, and as soon as our senses recognize a similar pattern, we say, “wow, she is beautiful!” …whereas in reality everything is beautiful.. every guy is beautiful… every girl is beautiful.. but you need to have eyes to know…

“Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder” goes another famous saying.. and I perfectly agree with it. 🙂

By the way, I am just curious to know, what made you choose this topic? 😀 😀 😀

Hey Lynn…agreed perceptions are stubborn…..but then who creates such perceptions in the minds of the people? M just trying to make a point here that ads can create perceptions…but shouldn’t be misleading or completely irrelevant… 🙂

@ Bombayite..Symmetry?…M not talkin about Art thought it is a form of beauty 🙂

    Hi Chiranjib…..
Well Beauty cud be myth…Its something that you would accept or deny….But @ the end of d day we are all lured by what pleases are eye in the 1st place….
I loved this commercial the very first time I watched it….and I have been a victim of some of the comments :P..hope that satiates your curiosity 😛 😛
